REL 31000 Islam and the West
(GE-Phl-Rel/CrsClt) This course is a detailed examination of the social history, theology, and philosophy of Islam that gives particular attention to questions about the relationship between the various Islamic and Modern Western cultures. It addresses topics such as the origins of Islam, Islam's historic encounters with the West, and the rise and development of Modernity. Special attention is given to contemporary attitudes in the West towards Islam, Islamic attitudes towards Western society, and the various movements within contemporary Islam.
