HIS 10700 African American History

GE-Human Culture: US History/Government/Human Diversity (GE-HC:USHisGov/HD) This course is a survey of the history of African-Americans in the United States from slavery to the present.  Topics covered in this course include: slavery and antebellum United States; Reconstruction and the meanings of freedom; African-Americans in a globalizing United States; Cold War and Civil Rights; Black Power to the “post-racial” America.  Students will explore the making of African-American identities and the contribution of African-Americans in United States history along with the development and lasting impact of institutional racism.  This course will enable students to have a deeper understanding of how African-Americans shaped their own history while simultaneously showing how the African-American experience is an essential part of American history.
