TA 33600 Survey of Dramatic Literature

GE-Human Culture: Arts/Human Culture: Literature/Human Diversity [GE-Lit/Fine Art/CrsClt] This course examines dramatic literature from all major periods of the Western world from ancient Greece to the present, providing an opportunity to understand the culture, history, and people that gave rise to it. The role of religion in theatre will be examined as it changes in emphasis, starting with the Greeks, to the present era, where it is almost absent. Emphasis is placed on bridging the gap that exists between the culture and time period of each play and the way in which each is presently interpreted and received. Students will contrast and relate the plays read in class to various aspects of modern culture and society.
