HIS 21700 The United States at the Movies

GE-Human Culture: US History/Government This course examines the history of American film from its technological development in the 19th century to the latest blockbuster films.  We will examine the industry and its products throughout the silent era, the golden age of Hollywood, Film Noir, the “new” American cinema of the 1970’s, the rise of independent film in the 1990’s, and contemporary digital movies. We will examine this history with an eye toward artistic, technological, and historical developments, as well as to the cultural and political contexts that shape them.  Examining this history will allow students to explore the cultural and economic history of the United States through the lens of one of the most popular industries and cultural products of the late 19th into the 21st centuries.
