REL 31000 Islam and the West

(GE-Phl-Rel/CrsClt) This course consists of an overview of the history, philosophy, and theology of Islam giving particular attention to the questions about the relationship between the various Islamic and Modern Western cultures. It will address topics like the following: the origins of Islam; Islam's historic encounters with the West; and the rise and development of Modernity, with special attention given to contemporary attitudes in the West towards Islam and Islamic attitudes towards the West.
