NUR 38300 Population-Based Maternal and Child Health

The purpose of this course is to provide an overview of issues and trends in maternal and child health for nurses and other professionals working with women and children. The history and theoretical underpinnings of maternal and child health will be introduced. Selected preconception, reproductive, perinatal, infant, child and adolescent health issues such as infant mortality, preterm birth, autism, childhood obesity, asthma, and lead poisoning will be analyzed within the context of the Life Course Perspective to health needs. The impact of environment, social structure, and maternal and child health policies and programs on morbidity, mortality and health disparities in women and children will be studied.
