HIST 32500 Social Movements in 20th Century America
America has a long history of social movements as ordinary people worked collectively for causes they believed in like voting, labor unions, civil rights, or civil liberties. This course examines how social movements transformed 20th century America, especially challenging issues concerning gender, labor, race, and ethnicity. We compare and contrast the ideological, historical, political, and economic origins of selected movements. We study tactics, responses from the general public, politicians, and the media, and the effects of the resulting changes.
